Award schemes all over the world are blighted with controversies. With serveral distinguished acts feeling aggrieved at being left of nominations or not winning the award proper. The most talked about has been Leonardo di caprio never winning at the Oscars.
The VGMA has had its fair share of controversy over the past few years. it's no longer a surprise when there are several complaints by artists across the genres.

To start with, what makes a hiphop song? This is a debate that has been ongoing for years. We have seen several songs which hitherto would have been described as hiplife now receiving nominations under hiphop. A few would argue that it's in the instrumentals others would argue that it's in the rhythm and lyrics. Whatever the definition is, the truth still remains that those at the helm of affairs are definitely not well inclined in that genre.
We have seen awards where Kwaw Kese has won Hiphop artiste of the year. Come on guys. Ok maybe the hiplife/hiphop awards were merged. But kwaw kese is definitely not a fair representation of the vast hip hop talent we have around. I have always had the opinion that astute djs like dj black or other new school djs like dj Mensah or Mike Smith should be on the selection panel. These would definitely do a better job at the selection process.
