Today in history- Billboard launches a top albums chart.

Billboard began an album chart in 1945. This chart was initially only five positions long, the album chart was not published on a weekly basis as it is now, sometimes three to seven weeks pass before being updated
Billboard produced a top albums chart listing the highest-ranking music albums and EPs in the United States, this list was published weekly by Billboard magazine.
The chat now ranks the top 200 albums making waves in the States for the week. It is used to ascertain the popularity of an artist or groups of artists. Often, a recording act will be remembered by its number ones; those of their albums that outperformed all others during at least one week.
The chart is based mostly on sales (both at retail and digitally) of albums.
Currently Kendrick Lamar's surprise album "Untitled Unmastered" leads the pack.
